middle voice from εγκρατης, - egkrates G 1468; to exercise self-restraint (in diet and chastity):--can(-not) contain, be temperate.
εγκρατευεται 1 Cor 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
εγκρατευονται 1 Cor 7:9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
